Prof Marcelo Alcantara Holanda graduated in Medicine at the Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, Brazil, in 1991. He is a pulmonologist and critical care specialist since 1996, after he finished his fellowship at the Federal University of São Paulo, UNIFESP- Brazil. He got his PhD in Medicine at the same institution in 1998. He is now an associate professor of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at the Federal University of Ceará and he is the head of the Respiration Laboratory (Resplab). He also works in private practice being the medical coordinator of the Monte Klinikum Hospital ICU and Pulmonology at the Pulmocenter Institute. He has long experience in teaching mechanical ventilation for more than 20 years. He also has experience in clinical practice by assisting mechanically ventilated and complex patients, either in the ICU or in home ventilation.
