About xlung

The "xlung" platform is a virtual simulation of mechanical ventilation, designed by pulmonologist and intensivist Dr. Marcelo Alcantara Holanda, who is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Medicine at the Universidade Federal do Ceará (Federal University of Ceará in Brazil, UFC). The “xlung” platform was the result of a project submitted to the “Fundação Cearense de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico” (Foundation of Ceará to Support Scientific and Technological Development) - FUNCAP / MCT / FINEP - PAPPE Grant No. 03/2008, SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR RESEARCH IN BUSINESS entitled "DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING OF THE VIRTUAL SIMULATION OF MECHANICAL VENTILATION (XLUNG) ", whose contract was published in the DIÁRIO OFICIAL DO ESTADO SÉRIE 3 ANO III Nº093 on May 17th, 2011 on page 11. It was developed by a team consisting of: IT engineers Manoel Lopes Filho and Eduardo Donato, under the supervision of both Dr. Marcelo Alcantara Holanda a physician with expertise in this medical field as well as Dr. Paulo César Cortez, an Associate Professor for the Department of Computer Engineering at UFC in the area of biomedical engineering. In 2011 “xlung” won first place for the Prêmio Brasil de Engenharia (Brazil Engineering Award) in the category Technology Education.

“Pulmocenter, Instituto do Pulmão”, is the sole owner of the "xlung" software platform, registered at National Institute of Intelectual Property [Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Intelectual (INPI)] in Brazil, number BR 51 2013 000525-6. All rights reserved, incluing it's logo.

  • Prof Marcelo Alcantara Holanda

    Idealizer, Director of xlung, Pneumologist and Intensivist

Prof Marcelo Alcantara Holanda graduated in Medicine at the Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, Brazil, in 1991. He is a pulmonologist and critical care specialist since 1996, after he finished his fellowship at the Federal University of São Paulo, UNIFESP- Brazil. He got his PhD in Medicine at the same institution in 1998. He is now an associate professor of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at the Federal University of Ceará and he is the head of the Respiration Laboratory (Resplab). He also works in private practice being Pulmonologist at the Pulmocenter Institute. He has long experience in teaching mechanical ventilation for more than 20 years. He also has experience in clinical practice by assisting mechanically ventilated and complex patients, either in the ICU or in home ventilation. The xlung platform was created and founded by him in 2012.
