At Xlung, we understand that mastering mechanical ventilation requires a solid foundation in respiratory physiology.
For this reason, we are launching a new series on our Forum:
🫁 Topics in Respiratory Physiology
😉 To begin, we are presenting a series of video lectures by the world-renowned Prof. Dr. John Burnard West (John B. West).
👉🏼 He is one of the greatest respiratory physiologists in the history of medicine—an absolute reference in everything related to gas exchange, ventilation, V/Q relationships, and clinically applied pulmonary physiology.
👉🏼 If today you comfortably discuss concepts such as the alveolar–arterial gradient, V/Q inequality, shunt, diffusion, and hypoxia, it is because the modern conceptual framework for these topics was organized, tested, and taught by him.
👉🏼 West demonstrated that the lung does not function homogeneously.
He described the famous “West’s zones” related to the V/Q relationship.
🎓 Born in 1928 in Adelaide, Australia, he is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), La Jolla, USA.
🎓 A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2001, he is widely recognized for his studies at extreme altitudes on Mount Everest and with astronauts in space. He is the author of landmark teaching texts in respiratory physiology and several books on the history of physiology. His classic textbook, Respiratory Physiology: The Essentials, first published in 1974 and now in its 11th edition, has been translated into 15 languages and is well known.
👉🏼 Regarding this video lecture series, he authored a special article explaining the initiative and outlining how the material can be used in different medical schools and health sciences programs.
